What are numbers? Why do humans have them? And why are they used? This will all be answered now by me, PB & J. Numbers are “an arithmetical value, expressed by a word, symbol, or figure, representing a particular quantity and used in counting and making calculations and for showing order in a series or for identification.”. Humans notice patterns, and when humans notice patterns they need to come up with a way to make sense of it. Nowadays babies are even equipped with the tool to understand change in quantity, the brain, more specifically the Inferior Parietal Lobe. .This part of the brain controls the Number Sense. Which allows humans to be able to recognize quantity like change in color. “Studies show that while infants have no grasp of human number systems, they can still identify changes in quantity” A long time ago humans decided to start developing “a means of augmenting their number sense. They started counting on their fingers and toes.” This is why most number systems today are usually based on 10 or 20. 10 for fingers and 20 for both fingers and toes. Without numbers or math, humans would not be able to go to the moon or even survive. It is ingrained within us to quantify, we cannot help it. Numbers are one of the most important things that helped humans evolve into what they are today.
