So I was watching Beauty and the Beast for, like, the bazillionth time yesterday, and I wondered what book Belle was talking about in the song, “Belle”. In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s this song, and she talks about the book at around 1:50 in the video.
So I hypothesized that she is talking about her own story, but without knowing that it’s her story. I feel like this would be Disney’s way of giving Belle her dream of living one of those fairy-tales that she loves to read. My other reasons:
- The movie starts out with a book opening so that the Narrator can read the story. On Broadway, I believe it is Mrs. Potts reading Belle’s story to Chip.
- “Here’s where she meets Prince Charming, but she wont discover that it’s him til chapter three…” Belle met the Beast early in the story, and later on he transforms into a Prince after she discovers that she loves him and they live happily ever yada yada yada.
- “Far off places, Daring sword fights, magic spells, a prince in disguise…” Are all things that happen during Belle’s journey in this movie. Far off Places: Maurice (Belle’s father) discovered the castle on his way to another town, when he got lost very far away from home. Daring Sword fights: Gaston and the Beast battled on top of the Beast’s castle in one of the last scenes. Magic Spells/ A Prince in Disguise: In the beginning of the story, the narrator explains that an old lady came to the castle and the Beast (who was a prince when it happened) refused to let her stay the night, so she cast a magic spell on him that turned him into a beast (thus prince in disguise as a beast).
Also, this has nothing to do with my little theory, but “belle” is the French word for “beautiful”, so that is why it’s called Beauty and the Beast. Just thought I’d say that for the benefit of anyone who didn’t know.

So that is my theory, What do you think? Feel free to share your opinion in the comments!!!
