Searching through the exciting, enriching, and never-ending webosphere, I came across this lovely gem of a website called Listverse (click here to see it!), where my mind was thoroughly, as this blog’s profile picture suggests, blown. In the aforementioned site (very well-written site, might I add), there is a list of the “Top Ten Unknowable Things.” What??? thought I, as I began to peruse the site. How can something be “unknowable?” Silly me, I had not yet been so enlightened as to understand the magnitude at which we, humanity, do not really understand very much. If we can list TEN things (count them, people) that we know nothing about, imagine the things we can’t even begin to know we know nothing about (you following me?).
Let me put it this way.
This is our world, our “circle of knowledge, so to speak of. Pretty all-encompassing, don’t you think?
As we zoom out…
… we see…
…that our circle of knowledge…
…isn’t that big…
In fact… it’s rather small. Kind of like a speck. A speck of knowledge, yeah, that’s what we have.
But see, the best part of knowing we only have a speck of knowledge is that we can expand it. Our speck of knowledge can grow into a circle of knowledge. We can go from zeroes to heroes, people!!
And the most absolute bestest part is that we are expanding our knowledge weekly, daily, hourly. Our knowledge about expansive topics like astrophysics, brain-mapping, stem cells, renewable energy, really really really big numbers (look up Graham’s number. I dare you.), coding, propulsion, and compounds is continually growing, and I think that’s pretty cool.
The point of all of this rambling? SCIENCE IS PRETTY FLIPPIN’ AWESOME! SCIENCE IS WHY WE HAVE THINGS LIKE THIS CONCEPT CAR
AND THIS 3D PRINTED EAR
AND THESE VIRTUAL-REALITY GLASSES (PROTOTYPING IN MILITARY)
AND THIS FUTURE IPHONE
AND THESE DISPOSABLE CHARGERS
AND THIS BIO-FRIDGE
AND THIS HOVERBOARD CONCEPT
AND THIS CLEAR TOASTER
AND THIS BUTTER STICK
AND THESE INCREDIBLY HELPFUL AND PRACTICAL AS-SEEN-ON-TV BREAD GLOVES
AND BY FAR, THE MOST USEFUL INVENTION OF THEM ALL, THIS SELFIE-STICK!
WITHOUT SCIENCE, WHERE WOULD WE BE, PEOPLE! Please leave comments!
